What you do at ANC?

Helping our people in different ways to achieve their full potential, making sure they have everything they need to do their job, and that they understand our vision and strategy. I then get out of their way and let them deliver those extraordinary experiences to our amazing clients and their customers. I also ensure our business strategy sets us apart as a transport and distribution company, and that we execute it faultlessly and profitably. And, most importantly, have some fun along the way!

Transport career experience?

Armed with a Bachelor of Economics from Sydney University I spent many years with Price Waterhouse and a variety of software, retail, light manufacturing, hospitality and transport businesses. In 1990, I became CFO of the Taylor Group, where I gained experience across a wide range of businesses including acquisitions and sales, and the development of the ANC transport group into a highly successful national business.

Favourite part of your job?

That’s easy – our people and culture. Helping and seeing people grow and reach their potential. I’m a great believer that an enjoyable work environment leads to greater business success.

How would you describe ANC if it was a person?

Encouraging, trustworthy, inclusive and respectful. Friendly, genuinely concerned for others, welcomes change and new ideas.

What do you like to do when you are not working?

Learning new things about economics, business, science and the environment. I enjoy time with friends and family, surfing, local bush walking. I’ve also done some intrepid cross country treks in Tasmania, the NT, Corsica, New Guinea and to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

How do you help ANC deliver extraordinary experiences?

Ensuring our team understands that this is a key strategy of our business and making sure we have the right people with the right training and systems in place to achieve it.

James Taylor

What you do at ANC?

High level strategic planning. I’m always looking at how new markets, models and developments in technology may positively impact our clients and our team of delivery professionals.

Transport career experience?

Twenty seven years in the light metropolitan transport industry plus extensive leadership roles with the Courier and Taxi Truck Association – five years as Treasurer and 12 years as President.

Favourite part of your job?

The diverse range of people I get to meet and collaborate with. Working on complex challenges and distilling them into an idea that is easy for people to understand and action.

How would you describe ANC if it was a person?

Every person is a complex organism, and ANC is no different. However, in a sentence, it’s passionate, dedicated and always wanting to improve the immediate situation.

What do you like to do when you are not working?

I like spending time with family, enjoy dinner parties with fine wine, food and friends. I have a thirst for learning, so enjoy reading. I love tinkering in my shed, welding poorly and fiddling with stuff around the house. Winter is my favourite time of year to enjoy skiing and being in the mountains surrounded by nature at its chilly, white best.

How do you help ANC deliver extraordinary experiences?

I look at the broader picture to frame the journey of the company and the people that make ANC such a special place. That means understanding the market forces, embracing change and looking at how we can improve the customer’s delivery experience for our clients through continuous improvements across transport safety, training, equipment, communication and technology and most importantly – relationships.

Matt Clarke-Bruce

What do you do at ANC?

My team does it all, and they do it better than I could.

Transport career experience?

Prior to starting at ANC in 2009, my transport experience was limited to touching on the supply chain as a Senior Finance Executive with small privately owned businesses ranging up to large publicly listed companies.

Favourite part of your job?

The people I work with. Genuine business relationships with people whose values align with mine matter most to me, and helping people and businesses to reach their potential is my passion.

How would you describe ANC if it was a person?

Authentic. You are better for having known them.

What do you like to do when you are not working?

Apart from enjoying spending time with my beautiful family, I love flicking lures from my little boat while sneaking along the shorelines of deserted coastal creeks with a mate.

How do you help ANC deliver extraordinary experiences?

If you are healthy, then you perform better. My team and I make sure the business is financially healthy for optimal performance.

Brett Randall

What do you do at ANC?

I am the National Manager Innovation & Improvement.

Transport career experience?

Started my transport industry career in 1979 as a Fleet Flyers courier for 11 years, before working my way up to Sales Manager and then Operations Manger. After starting with ANC In 2009 I was appointed General Manager of NSW Operations and in 2012 promoted to General Manager of NSW.

Favourite part of your job?

Working with the people of ANC and being part of a successful team. I like being a winner!

How would you describe ANC if it was a person?

They would be very ambitious, perhaps on steroids and at times, difficult. ANC needs a good support team to slow them down and keep them under control

What do you like to do when you are not working?

I am very passionate about family, my pets and staying active and fit. My family life and fitness are a great way to free my mind from work once the day or week is done.

How do you help ANC deliver extraordinary experiences?

Coming from my background as a delivery driver, I really try to put myself in their shoes. I won’t ask a driver to do something that I wouldn’t have done. I help drivers understand how important their role is and believe they should be rewarded for their efforts fairly. Providing the right driver training is vital too. A happy, confident, knowledgeable driver is a key ingredient for a happy customer and extraordinary delivery experience.

Kylee Bidwell

What you do at ANC?

I am responsible for ensuring we meet ANC’s standard of delivery excellence to protect our clients brand and delight the customers. Our operational capabilities are diverse, demanding expertise across hardware, white goods, electrical and premium furniture, so no day is ever the same. Working closely with my State Managers, we support our national team of 1,000+ employees and contractors to safely and meticulously deliver into homes, workplaces, schools and hospitals with professionalism and care.

Transport career experience?

I have worked for ANC, or one of its affiliated companies, since 1993 and have been in my current role since 2018. I started working as a booking clerk before moving into accounts receivable/payable, payroll and ultimately senior management.

Favourite part of your job?

Helping customers solve their delivery challenges. I enjoy nutting out a problem to see how ANC can provide a solution to the seemingly impossible. I also like interacting with my ANC team mates around Australia. It is always invigorating to hear about new ways of doing things and sharing strategic transport solutions.

How would you describe ANC if it was a person?

ANC is like a best friend. It’s always been there and I can see us growing old together.

What do you like to do when you are not working?

Spending time with my family, particularly my kids. Contributing at the grass roots of my community is important so I volunteer on a number of state sporting associations and set an example to my children about the value of giving back. I also enjoy tenpin bowling and walking Memphis, our English Staffy.

How do you help ANC deliver extraordinary experiences?

My role is to empower my team. Ensure they understand where we are going, our goals and their critical individual roles. I also provide them with the tools and training to execute to our high standard and provide feedback (both good and constructive) so we maintain the highest level of customer service – and delivery service – that our clients expect.

Maria Harrison

What you do at ANC?

I’m fortunate to work with delivery professionals across every aspect of our business, and in every state. It’s my role to support the changes our people experience as the business grows, enable everyone to be engaged and aligned in our strategy and growth, and ensure we maintain the very special culture that makes ANC a great place to work.

Transport career experience?

I started as a clerk in a big four bank, then worked and studied my way into a career in human resources. I’ve gained a broad experience in consulting, organisational development, learning and development, workers compensation and more.

Favourite part of your job?

I absolutely love the many opportunities I get to work with colleagues in every state on projects that improve the workplace – in other words, collaborating with my ANC teammates!

How would you describe ANC if it was a person?

Street smart as a result of years of experience. Warm, wise and just a little bit crazy, but in a good way!

What do you like to do when you are not working?

Hang out with family, catch up with friends and bask in life’s many pleasures – eating, drinking, reading, walking, dancing, geocaching (GPS treasure hunts!), travelling…I could keep going. How long have you got?

How do you help ANC deliver extraordinary experiences?

Inspire, encourage and help our delivery drivers provide the most extraordinary delivery experiences by ensuring they have the right tools, information and support. This includes giving others in the ANC team the tools, information and support they need to support the drivers!

Sophie Bartho

What you do at ANC?

Work with the Executive Team on strategy and governance and lead the brand, communications and marketing of ANC.

Transport career experience?

After successfully running my own full service agency for 17 years, I sold that and have been consulting to a broad range of clients ever since, including ANC. I started with ANC when five state courier businesses came together under a federated model to create Australian National Couriers, now known as ANC. It has been an amazing journey to watch the strategy and growth evolve since 2004.

Favourite part of your job?

I enjoy working with the Leadership and Management Teams, and the entire One Team across all functions of the business. I am constantly in awe of others expertise – safety, operations, people, sales, IT, finance and of course our driver teams. Protecting the ANC brand, building our reputation and carefully delivering our communications across multiple platforms is what drives me each day. I discovered the power and creativity in communications  during my work experience at school, and have loved it ever since. The ability to build value and reputation, and influence behaviour change and outcomes, with words and graphics, is powerful and a privilege. My family cheekily say I spend my days ‘colouring in’!

How would you describe ANC if it was a person?

Strong, wise, resilient, humble and capable of more.

What do you like to do when you are not working?

Running, walking, climbing mountains, preferably with my two dogs, family and friends, followed by a spectacular home cooked meal and great wine. And then a whisky on ice. All by an open camp fire.

How do you help ANC deliver extraordinary experiences?

Hmmmm, tricky question. I believe I simply help others within the business deliver extraordinary experiences. This is achieved through instilling our core values and reinforcing our fabulous culture. I hope I help our recruitment team attract the talent, our safety, ops and HR teams train and retain the talent, and our sales team to tell the ANC brand story.

Ultimately it is our drivers who do the amazing job of engaging with the customer and delivering excellence in all kinds of situations. The ‘Out on the Road’ program is inspiring. I enjoy the opportunity to see the work done day in and day out by our drivers. They’re amazing.

Wayne Shepherd

What do you do at ANC?

My role at ANC is to ensure that our solutions improve the daily lives of our major clients. These solutions must drive client sales and deliver rock solid outcomes so the clients can focus on where they’re going and not where they’ve been.

Transport career experience?

I’ve spent most of my career in transport, retail sales and management when running my own business. I’ve been with ANC since 1993, but my time as an apprentice tool maker (yes, some time ago) taught me the importance of hard work, manufacturing and process flow – all critical elements of my role today, especially flow.

Favourite part of your job?

Learning about client businesses and coming up with real solutions. I love watching clients enjoy the light bulb moment when they realise we have come through the challenges and nailed the solution.

How would you describe ANC if it was a person?

Generous, nurturing, caring, fun and values long-term relationships. Fiercely loyal and committed – wants to be treated fairly and will do everything possible to ensure all partners get more than they expected out of the relationship.

What do you like to do when you are not working?

I love spending time with family and friends, camping, eating out and riding my Harley into the hills or along the coast with my wife. I am passionate about life, family, cars and bikes.

How do you help ANC deliver extraordinary experiences?

Building trust with clients and finding the answer everyone else said was impossible. This means meeting regularly with them, and my fantastic team. We become part of the client’s business, measure performance and drive improvements over the long term – including a fair return to our dedicated delivery drivers. I am proud to say we have many major customers than have been with us for 10 years or more.
