Don Mills

What you do at ANC?

Helping our people in different ways to achieve their full potential, making sure they have everything they need to do their job, and that they understand our vision and strategy. I then get out of their way and let them deliver those extraordinary experiences to our amazing clients and their customers. I also ensure our business strategy sets us apart as a transport and distribution company, and that we execute it faultlessly and profitably. And, most importantly, have some fun along the way!

Transport career experience?

Armed with a Bachelor of Economics from Sydney University I spent many years with Price Waterhouse and a variety of software, retail, light manufacturing, hospitality and transport businesses. In 1990, I became CFO of the Taylor Group, where I gained experience across a wide range of businesses including acquisitions and sales, and the development of the ANC transport group into a highly successful national business.

Favourite part of your job?

That’s easy – our people and culture. Helping and seeing people grow and reach their potential. I’m a great believer that an enjoyable work environment leads to greater business success.

How would you describe ANC if it was a person?

Encouraging, trustworthy, inclusive and respectful. Friendly, genuinely concerned for others, welcomes change and new ideas.

What do you like to do when you are not working?

Learning new things about economics, business, science and the environment. I enjoy time with friends and family, surfing, local bush walking. I’ve also done some intrepid cross country treks in Tasmania, the NT, Corsica, New Guinea and to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

How do you help ANC deliver extraordinary experiences?

Ensuring our team understands that this is a key strategy of our business and making sure we have the right people with the right training and systems in place to achieve it.

What you do at ANC?

As the Client Service Trainer, I’m responsible for recruiting the Operations Team in NSW. My role requires me to be the ‘jack of all trades’ to ensure I can simply ‘make things happen’ with an amazing team around us ready for action.

Transport career experience?

I started my career at 15 years of age working for PMG (now Telstra) taking telegrams over the phone, then much later I was lucky enough to move into the hospitality industry as a Customer Service Manager. I initially joined ANC as a part time Dispatch Assistant and have enjoyed numerous roles since 2007 including Customer Service Manager, Recruitment Manager and even had a short stint as an Account Manager. All my roles ultimately involve service to an internal and external stakeholder relationship.

Favourite part of your job?

The people. I have been lucky to witness the culture of ANC as it has grown and prosper over the years. To stay at a company as long as I have you need to be surrounded by amazing and supportive people.

How would you describe ANC if it was a person?

I would liken ANC to the great Winston Churchill A person who is stoic, loyal and very fair.

What do you like to do when you are not working?

I do not let age determine. When I am not working, I love to stay fit. I am a ‘gym junkie’ attending up to six times a week and I also love walking. My interest in walking has taken me on many adventures around the world with my latest being a 930-kilometre trek from San Sebastian to Finisterre in Spain. Walking this distance, for much of it on my own, is definitely soul searching. Reaching the finish line, I was overcome by so many emotions and a feeling of accomplishment. My next adventure is a milder 400km walk from Portugal to Spain.

How do you help ANC deliver extraordinary experiences?

Each day I believe I walk through the door bringing my A game to the team. Staying focused and committed to making both the big and small things happen helps to ensure ANC continue to deliver these extraordinary experiences.

What do you do at ANC?

I have been a Delivery Driver at ANC since 2009 with a full time run for DHL.

Transport career experience?

My background prior to joining ANC was in the finance industry. I spent 35 years as a Bank Manager and a Mortgage Broker. My passion and desire to work in the outdoors led me to a career change and becoming a delivery driver. I haven’t looked back since.

Favourite part of your job?

I am fortunate enough to meet new people with each delivery. It makes for interesting conversations and would have to be my favourite part of the job.

What do you like to do when you are not working?

I enjoy playing cricket and travelling. As I head towards retirement in the next few weeks, I plan to finish renovating my house, help my son at his mechanic business and take time to unwind with my grandkids.

What do you think delivering extraordinary experiences means?

As an ANC Driver we are the face of the company. Delivering extraordinary experiences is being mindful of this and leaving a lasting impression on the customer by always being punctual, friendly and courteous with every delivery.
